Two Weeks in New Zealand: The Ultimate South Island Road Trip
Focus your two weeks entirely on the South Island to avoid spending your whole vacation in transit. Rent a campervan or reliable car to hit the major highlights of the Southern Alps, glaciers, and fjords at your own pace.
- Rent a vehicle. Book a campervan or 4WD vehicle at least 3 months in advance. Pick up in Christchurch and drop off in Queenstown to maximize your time.
- Book your ferries and 'Great Walks'. If you plan to hike sections of tracks like the Milford or Routeburn, book your backcountry hut passes online via the Department of Conservation (DOC) website the moment they open.
- Download offline maps. Cell service is non-existent in mountain passes and deep fjords. Download Google Maps for the entire South Island before leaving Christchurch.
- Prepare for four seasons. Even in summer, mountain weather changes in 20 minutes. Always pack a high-quality windbreaker and fleece, regardless of the forecast.
- Is it better to rent a car or a campervan?
- A campervan gives you more freedom and saves on accommodation costs, but it is harder to park in cities. If you aren't comfortable driving a large vehicle on narrow, windy roads, stick to a rental car and motels.
- Do I need a 4WD vehicle?
- For the standard tourist loop, a standard sedan is fine. Only rent a 4WD if you plan on visiting specific remote backcountry areas or if you are traveling in the deep shoulder seasons when snow might be present on mountain passes.
