How to Plan a Multi-Country Trip
Start with your must-see destinations and build a logical route between them. Book flights with open-jaw tickets (fly into one city, out of another) and budget $100-150 per day per country depending on regions. Give yourself at least 4-5 days per country to make travel time worthwhile.
- Map your route logically. Pick 3-5 countries maximum for your first multi-country trip. Plot them on a map and create a route that minimizes backtracking. For Europe, go west to east or north to south. For Asia, follow the backpacker trail: Thailand → Vietnam → Cambodia. Don't zigzag.
- Book open-jaw flights. Search for multi-city flights on Google Flights or book separate one-way tickets. Open-jaw (flying into London, out of Rome) often costs the same as round-trip. Book these 2-3 months ahead for best prices.
- Research visa requirements for your route. Check visa requirements for each country in order. Some visas take 2-4 weeks to process. Apply for the longest processing time first. Use embassy websites, not visa agencies for accurate info.
- Plan your transportation between countries. Budget flights work for longer distances (London to Barcelona: €30-80). Trains are better for shorter hops in Europe (Paris to Brussels: €35, 3 hours). Buses are cheapest but slowest. Book train tickets 1-2 months ahead for deals.
- Stagger your accommodation bookings. Book first and last nights before you go. Book middle cities 1-2 weeks ahead once you know your exact dates. This gives you flexibility if you want to stay longer somewhere or weather changes your plans.
- Pack for multiple climates. Check weather for each destination during your travel dates. Pack layers that work together. One warm jacket, one rain layer, clothes that mix and match. Limit yourself to what you can carry comfortably for 20 minutes.
- How many countries should I visit on my first multi-country trip?
- 3-4 countries maximum. You need at least 4-5 days per country to make travel time and costs worthwhile. Less than that and you'll spend more time in airports than exploring.
- Should I book everything in advance?
- Book flights and first/last nights of accommodation. Leave middle portions flexible - book 1-2 weeks ahead. This gives you freedom to extend stays in places you love or skip places that don't click.
- What if I want to change my route mid-trip?
- One-way flights and flexible train tickets make this possible but expensive. Budget airlines often charge $100-300 to change flights. Build buffer days into your itinerary instead of trying to change transportation.
