Planning Visas for a Multi-Country Southern Africa Trip
Most travelers visiting South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe need to plan for a mix of visa-free entry and paid frontier visas. You must secure your longest-stay visas in advance and ensure you have at least four blank passport pages to accommodate back-to-back border crossings.
- Map your border crossings. List every country you are entering and the method of entry (land or air). Many Southern African countries, like Zimbabwe, offer easier visa processing at airports than at remote land border posts.
- Check the KAZA UniVisa eligibility. If traveling between Zambia and Zimbabwe, apply for the KAZA UniVisa ($50 USD). It covers both countries and allows for day trips into Botswana via the Kazungula border without needing extra paperwork.
- Prepare your 'passport real estate'. Each country requires at least one full blank page for entry and exit stamps. With four countries on your itinerary, ensure you have 8-10 clear pages. If not, get a new passport before you leave.
- Secure proof of onward travel. Border officials often demand proof that you are leaving. Have digital and paper copies of your return flight and your next accommodation booking in the following country.
- Carry USD in new, crisp bills. For visas-on-arrival in Zimbabwe or Zambia, pay in US Dollars. Officials often reject torn, marked, or pre-2013 bills. Bring small denominations ($5, $10, $20) as they rarely carry change.
- Do I need a yellow fever certificate?
- If you are traveling through endemic areas (including Zambia or transit through major hubs), you will likely be asked for your 'Yellow Card.' Carry your original vaccination record.
- Can I pay for visas with a credit card?
- Rarely at land borders. Always assume 'Cash Only' in USD at land crossings.
