3 Days in Vancouver: A First-Timer's Guide

Spend your first day exploring Stanley Park and the West End, your second day on Granville Island and the surrounding water, and your third day in the North Shore mountains. Use the TransLink system (SkyTrain and SeaBus) to get everywhere without needing a rental car.

  1. Get a Compass Card. Purchase a reusable Compass Card at any SkyTrain station. Tap in and out on every transit vehicle. It is significantly cheaper than buying individual tickets.
  2. Use the SeaBus. Don't pay for a harbor cruise. The SeaBus runs from Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay. It takes 12 minutes, offers incredible skyline views, and costs the price of a standard transit fare.
  3. Book Capilano in Advance. If you plan to visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge, book your time slot online at least 48 hours early to avoid long queues at the ticket booth.
Is Vancouver safe for solo travelers?
Yes, generally. Avoid walking alone at night in the Downtown Eastside neighborhood, but the rest of the city is highly walkable and safe.
Do I need a car in Vancouver?
No. A car is actually a burden due to limited parking and expensive rates. Public transit covers all major tourist spots.
