How to spend 3 days in Rome as a first-time visitor

To see the essentials, spend your first day in Ancient Rome, your second in the Vatican, and your third wandering the historic center. Book all major monument tickets at least 30 days in advance to avoid hours of waiting in line.

  1. Book timed entries early. The Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican Museums require timed entry slots. Buy these directly from the official sites (CoopCulture for Colosseum, Musei Vaticani for the Vatican) at least one month before your trip.
  2. Use the metro and walk. Rome’s historic center is highly walkable. Use the Metro (Lines A and B) only to reach distant sites like the Vatican or the Colosseum. Download the 'Free Now' app for taxis if you are in a rush.
  3. Master the water fountains. Do not buy plastic water bottles. Carry a reusable bottle and fill it at the 'nasoni' (curved metal drinking fountains) found on every street corner. The water is ice-cold and free.
Is Rome safe for solo travelers?
Yes, it is very safe. The biggest threat is pickpockets on the Metro and around major tourist sites. Keep your wallet in your front pocket and your bag zipped.
Do I need to tip in restaurants?
No. A 'coperto' (cover charge) is usually included in the bill. If service was exceptional, leaving 1-2 Euros per person is plenty.
