How to Plan a 10-Day Portugal Itinerary

Spend 3 days in Lisbon, 2 days in Porto, 2 days in the Douro Valley, and 3 days in the Algarve for a complete Portugal experience. This covers the major cities, wine country, and beaches without rushing.

  1. Book your flights to Lisbon. Fly into Lisbon (LIS) as your entry point. TAP Air Portugal has the most direct routes from North America. Book 6-8 weeks ahead for best prices.
  2. Plan your route north to south. Start in Lisbon (3 days), take the train to Porto (2 days), explore Douro Valley (2 days), then fly or drive south to the Algarve (3 days). This minimizes backtracking.
  3. Book accommodations early in summer. May through September fills up fast, especially in the Algarve. Book by March for summer travel. Quintas (wine estates) in Douro Valley book up fastest.
  4. Get a rental car for Douro and Algarve. You need a car for Douro Valley wine tours and Algarve beach hopping. Skip the car in Lisbon and Porto - use trams and metros instead.
  5. Plan around Portuguese meal times. Lunch is 12:30-2:30pm, dinner starts at 7:30pm earliest. Many restaurants close 3-7pm. Plan sightseeing around these gaps.
Do I need to rent a car for the whole trip?
No. Use public transport in Lisbon and Porto, rent a car only for Douro Valley and Algarve portions. This saves money and parking hassles in cities.
Can I do this itinerary in reverse?
Yes, but flying into Porto and out of Faro costs more than round-trip Lisbon flights. The north-to-south route also follows the historical exploration pattern.
Is 10 days enough for Portugal?
Yes for first-time visitors covering highlights. Add 3-5 days if you want to include Óbidos, Coimbra, or spend more time in each region.
When should I avoid Portugal?
July-August brings crowds and heat, especially in the Algarve. December-February has good weather in the south but rain in the north.
