How to Pack Sunscreen in Your Carry-On
Sunscreen counts as a liquid and must follow the 3-1-1 rule: containers 3.4 oz (100ml) or smaller, all fitting in one quart-sized clear bag. Pack larger bottles in checked luggage or buy at your destination.
- Check your sunscreen container size. Look at the bottle label for fluid ounces or milliliters. If it's over 3.4 oz (100ml), it cannot go in carry-on luggage. Transfer to a smaller container or pack in checked bags.
- Use travel-size containers. Buy 3 oz travel bottles from any pharmacy or use empty containers from previous trips. Silicone squeeze tubes work well and won't crack. Label them clearly with a permanent marker.
- Pack in your liquids bag. Place sunscreen containers in your one quart-sized clear plastic bag with other liquids. This bag must be removed separately during security screening.
- Consider solid alternatives. Sunscreen sticks don't count as liquids and can go anywhere in your carry-on. They're perfect for face application and TSA-hassle-free travel.
- Plan for long flights. If flying over 8 hours, pack a small amount in your liquids bag for reapplication. Window seats get more UV exposure at altitude, especially on daytime flights.
- Can I bring aerosol sunscreen in carry-on?
- Yes, but it still follows the 3-1-1 rule. Aerosol containers over 3.4 oz are prohibited. The pressurized container also counts toward your liquids allowance.
- What if my sunscreen is exactly 3.4 oz?
- 3.4 oz is the maximum allowed, so you're fine. However, if the container looks larger than 3.4 oz even if partially full, TSA may confiscate it. Use clearly labeled travel containers to avoid confusion.
- Do I need to declare sunscreen at security?
- Only if it's in your liquids bag, which you'll remove anyway. Sunscreen sticks and solid formulas don't need declaration and can stay in your carry-on during screening.
- Can I bring prescription sunscreen?
- Yes, prescription medications including medicated sunscreens are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule. Bring the prescription label and declare it separately at security.
