How to Ride the Star Ferry with Kids in Hong Kong
The Star Ferry is one of the easiest attractions in Hong Kong to do with children — it's a 10-minute ride, costs less than 50 cents, and gives you harbor views without walking miles. Board on the lower deck for easier stroller access, sit on the right side heading to Kowloon for the best skyline views, and go in the evening when buildings are lit up.
- Pick your route and timing. The Central to Tsim Sha Tsui route is the classic ride — 10 minutes across Victoria Harbour with full skyline views. Go between 5-7pm for the Symphony of Lights show (8pm nightly) or mid-morning when it's less crowded. Avoid rush hours (8-9am, 5:30-6:30pm) when commuters pack the ferry.
- Get tickets at the pier. Buy tickets at the turnstile — HKD 3.70 on weekdays, HKD 4.70 on weekends for upper deck (adults). Kids under 3 are free. Octopus cards work and save time. Cash machines only take exact change in coins. Upper deck costs more but gives better views — worth it with kids who want to see everything.
- Board on the lower deck if you have a stroller. Lower deck has level boarding — no stairs. Upper deck requires carrying strollers up a steep gangway. Once aboard, you can move between decks. The lower deck is fine for views — you're only losing about 6 feet of height.
- Sit on the harbor side. Heading to Kowloon from Central: sit on the right side for Hong Kong Island skyline views. Heading back to Central: sit on the left. The open-air sections at the front and back are best but fill up fast. Indoor seats are fine — windows are large and clean.
- Keep kids seated until docking. The ferry stops with a jolt. Everyone rushes for the exit before the boat is fully docked. Keep kids in their seats until the actual docking thump, then walk off calmly. Gates open from both ends — no need to rush.
- Make it a round trip. One crossing takes 10 minutes. Kids often want to go back immediately — that's fine. It's cheaper than most playground admissions. Combine it with a walk along Tsim Sha Tsui promenade or a stop at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (at the Central pier) if you need more activity.
- Is the Star Ferry safe for young kids?
- Yes. Railings are high, decks are enclosed or have railings, and the water is calm inside the harbor. The biggest risk is kids running on a moving boat — keep them seated during the crossing. Life jackets are not provided or needed for this short, sheltered route.
- Can we bring a stroller on board?
- Yes. Board on the lower deck where there are no steps. Strollers park near your seat — there's no designated area but space is generous. Fold it if the ferry is packed during commuter hours.
- Do we need to book in advance?
- No. The Star Ferry is a commuter service that runs every 6-12 minutes depending on time of day. You buy tickets and board. Even on busy days, you rarely wait more than one departure.
- What if my kid needs a bathroom?
- There are no bathrooms on the ferry. It's only a 10-minute ride. Use facilities at the pier before boarding — both Central and Tsim Sha Tsui terminals have public restrooms.
- Is it worth doing if we're already taking the MTR everywhere?
- Yes. The MTR is fast but underground. The Star Ferry is slow, scenic, and feels like an activity, not just transport. Kids remember the ferry ride. They don't remember the subway.
