How to Ride the Peak Tram with Kids in Hong Kong

The Peak Tram is a 10-minute funicular ride up Victoria Peak that kids love. Book tickets online to skip the hour-long queue, arrive early morning or late afternoon, and sit on the right side for the best views. The whole experience — tram ride, time at the Peak, and return — takes 2-3 hours.

  1. Book tickets online before you go. Buy Sky Pass tickets (tram + Sky Terrace 428) at thepeak.com.hk. Adult tickets are HKD 99 (USD 13), children 3-11 are HKD 50 (USD 6.50). Skip-the-line QR codes go straight to your phone. The regular ticket line at Garden Road station can hit 60-90 minutes on weekends and holidays. Online tickets let you walk past all of it.
  2. Get to the Garden Road Lower Terminus. Take the MTR to Central station, exit J2. Walk uphill on Garden Road for 10 minutes, or take bus 15C from the Star Ferry for HKD 4.90. The terminus is at 33 Garden Road. With kids, budget 20-25 minutes door-to-door from Central MTR. There are clean bathrooms inside the terminus — use them before boarding.
  3. Board and sit on the right side. When your tram pulls in, grab seats on the right side facing uphill. This side gets the dramatic city view as you climb. The tram tilts at a 27-degree angle — younger kids think the buildings are falling over. Let them stand at the window between stops if the car is not crowded. The ride takes 10 minutes with one stop at Barker Road.
  4. Explore the Peak. Exit onto Sky Terrace 428 for the viewing deck. Kids can run around the open-air platform while you photograph the skyline. Head down to the Peak Galleria for bathrooms and snacks, or walk the easy Peak Circle Walk — a 3.5km flat loop that takes 45 minutes. The walk has no shade, so bring sun protection. Skip the Peak Tower shops unless it is raining — they are generic tourist retail.
  5. Time your return ride. The down-tram gets crowded after 5pm when everyone wants sunset views. Either head down by 4pm or wait until after 7pm. Your Sky Pass works for return within the same day — no new ticket needed. Downhill seats on the left side get the view this time. Kids often fall asleep on the way down.
Can I bring a stroller on the Peak Tram?
Yes. Fold it if the car is packed, but most of the time you can roll it right on. The tram has a flat entry — no steps to navigate.
What if my kid freaks out on the steep tram?
The angle surprises some toddlers. Sit them on your lap for the first minute until they adjust. Let them watch out the window — seeing the buildings tilt usually turns fear into giggles. If they really hate it, the ride is only 10 minutes. You can take a taxi down for HKD 80-100 if needed.
Is the Peak Tower worth paying extra for?
No. Your Sky Pass includes Sky Terrace 428, which is the best viewing deck. The Madame Tussauds and other Peak Tower attractions are skippable unless it is pouring rain and you need indoor entertainment.
How long should we spend at the Peak?
1-1.5 hours is enough for most families. That is 20 minutes on Sky Terrace for photos, 30-40 minutes walking part of the Peak Circle Walk, and 10 minutes for bathroom and snack breaks. Kids under 5 get antsy after an hour.
What if we miss our tram time slot?
Online tickets are not time-specific. You can show up anytime the same day. The QR code works for one up-trip and one down-trip whenever you are ready.
Can we walk down instead of taking the tram back?
Yes, but it is not fun with kids. The Old Peak Road walk down takes 45-60 minutes on steep paved road with no shade and minimal views. Save it for when your kids are teenagers.
