How to Spend One Week in Scotland

Focus your week on the stretch between Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye to balance history with dramatic landscapes. Use a rental car for the Highlands to avoid restricted bus schedules, but stick to trains between major cities.

  1. Pick up your rental car in Stirling. Don't drive in Edinburgh. Take the train to Stirling, rent your car there, and head north. This saves you from narrow city streets and expensive parking fees.
  2. Book your ferry to Skye in advance. If you are driving, reserve the CalMac ferry or ensure you have your route mapped via the Skye Bridge. Book at least 3 months ahead if traveling in July or August.
  3. Pack for four seasons in a day. Even in summer, temperatures hover around 15°C (59°F). Bring a high-quality, windproof rain shell; umbrellas are useless in the Scottish Highlands due to wind.
  4. Use 'Munro Bagging' apps. If you plan to hike, download an app like WalkHighlands. It provides accurate GPX maps and safety alerts for the rugged terrain.
What are midges?
Tiny biting insects that swarm in the Highlands during summer. Buy 'Smidge' repellent locally; it works much better than standard DEET.
Do I need a car?
If you want to see the Highlands on your own schedule, yes. Trains are great between cities, but they don't reach the remote parts of the Isle of Skye.
