Two Weeks in Italy: A No-Nonsense Itinerary
To see the best of Italy in 14 days, stick to the 'Big Three' (Rome, Florence, Venice) and add one secondary region like the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre. Use high-speed trains to connect these hubs to minimize travel fatigue and maximize sightseeing time.
- Book your open-jaw flight. Fly into Rome (FCO) and out of Venice (VCE), or vice versa. This saves you an entire day and roughly $100 in unnecessary backtracking travel costs.
- Secure regional train tickets. Use Trenitalia or Italo apps to book 'Frecciarossa' high-speed train tickets at least 30 days in advance. Last-minute tickets cost double.
- Pre-book major attractions. Buy timed-entry tickets for the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, and the Uffizi Gallery online weeks before you leave. If you don't, you will spend 3+ hours in lines.
- Do I need to tip at restaurants?
- No. A service charge (coperto) is usually included. Rounding up to the nearest Euro is plenty.
- Is it safe?
- Italy is very safe, but watch for pickpockets in crowded tourist areas and on trains.
