How to navigate the Singapore MRT system

Skip the single-ride tickets and tap your contactless bank card (Visa/Mastercard) or mobile wallet (Apple/Google Pay) directly at the gantries. You will be charged the exact distance-based fare automatically, avoiding the need to queue at ticket machines.

  1. Use your existing bank card. Ensure your Visa or Mastercard is 'contactless' (look for the wave symbol). Tap your physical card or add it to your phone's digital wallet. You do not need to buy a physical EZ-Link card unless you prefer not to use your bank card.
  2. Master the tap-in/tap-out process. Always tap your card or phone on the reader at the entry gantry to start your journey. You MUST tap the exact same card or device at the exit gantry to calculate the correct fare. If you don't tap out, you will be charged the maximum possible fare for the line.
  3. Follow the line colors. The Singapore MRT map is color-coded by line. Follow the signs in the stations that match the color and direction of the destination indicated on the map. The next station name is clearly announced and displayed on LED screens inside every train.
  4. Check the final train times. MRT services generally run from 5:30 AM to midnight. Check the 'Last Train' timings posted at the station entrance if you are out late, as these vary by station and line.
Do I need to buy a Singapore Tourist Pass?
Only if you plan to take more than 5-6 trips per day. For most travelers, just tapping your credit card is cheaper and more convenient.
Can I eat or drink on the MRT?
No. Eating and drinking (including water) is strictly prohibited inside trains and station paid areas. Fines can reach 500 SGD.
Is the MRT map easy to read?
Yes. It uses clear colors and numbers for each station. You can download the 'MyTransport.SG' app or just use Google Maps, which is 100% accurate for MRT routes.
